WHY IS MY CAR SHAKING?

Over time you begin to notice your vehicle shake while driving. What’s the cause of this? To determine WHY your car is shaking you need to look at WHEN your car is shaking. If you only feel a vibration when you’re braking, that’s an indicator that it may be time to replace your pads or rotors. A shaking steering wheel is a good indicator that your brake rotors have warped and it may be time for a replacement. Occasionally your brake caliper can stick. The stick becomes more noticeable at higher speeds and can be accompanied by a burning smell. A shaking steering wheel doesn’t always mean that it’s a brake issue. Struts, ball joints, bearings, and tie rods can all be responsible for steering wheel shake.

Your tires and wheels are another issue that can be responsible for vehicle vibration. The wheels your tires are mounted on can be unbalanced, bent, or damaged. Tires that are worn, bald, old, or dry is a common cause of road vibration. Depending on the state of the tire you need to inflate, deflate, or even rotate them to reach top performance.

This is only the tip of the iceberg. While these are the most common causes of vehicle shaking, that doesn’t mean they’re the only ones. As always, we highly encourage you to seek out an ASE-certified mechanic to diagnose your problem. In the greater Richmond area?
